Spaldings First Yogathon

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I know I have said this before but many of you may already be aware that I am relentlessly trying to raise money towards a trek to  base camp everest, which myself and two other family members are doing. The amount we have to raise is pretty substantial, but in a couple more weeks we will have achieved the first £1000. Just another £11,000 to go :-) )

Towards this huge task I have taken on, I have thought of a whole bunch of ideas towards raising the money, the first of which, myself and my family did on May 1st which was flower parade here in Spalding. The next event is a yogathon. A marathon yoga session?…….. but really it will be alittle over a standard session, where the meditation and warmup may be alittle longer. The ‘thon’ part comes from the idea of getting as many women as possible to take part. We have a fairly big hall as the venue to do it from.

The response is not guarateed, because going into June, people are leaving on summer holidays, but perhaps this problem with the old icelandic volcano, which does not seem to want to stop coughin up ash, might delay peoples plans…I realise I’m being somewhat selfish…but I’m sure you will understand how needs must…Â

I have managed to get a wonderful friend of mine to lead the session. She is a fitness instructor, primarily, who since childhood took part in gymnastics and continued to develop her flexibility. She like me runs her own company, and though I have trained with alot of yoga teachers..she is as good as many we see and read about in the various yoga publications around the world. I feel quite priviliged that she has agreed to help me out. I am hoping my own students will benefit from another method of teaching. If anyone reading out there is even remotely interested in knowing more then you can find information on Facebook at my fan page  for the trek, and at the member page for my network site

Ofcourse you can also visit my website www.touchofhealing.co.uk where as I update my events page you will be able to access whats going on. With regards to yoga however, I have a personal theory on why it is such an effective regime of exercise. No one can argue its ability to calm the mind and bring our focus from the humdrum and chaos, back into our bodies, so slowing the sympathic nervous processes right down. It builds physical strength through balance, but since in Myofascial Release therapy I use the character of connective tissue to release restriction, and free up obstruction to the required flow of blood and fluid, stretching muscular tissue, has the same effect.

Whilst practicing yoga myself I am very aware, that I am effectively doing a similar thing, and the stretch feels so good, especially where ever I  am tight. Once I have stretched, everything seems to move more freely and I find vitality is restored and I feel more energetic.

Visceral Manipulation is also founded on the principal that the bodies organs need to and want to be able to move free inorder to function effectively. Sometimes when we investigate the way the body is positioned or moving during yoga, we discover it has a similar positive impact upon organ structures. Colour healing can be utilised easily during the meditative parts of yoga and begin to impact positively on the energetic components of our aura, and ultimately benefits our physical body. Yoga is truely a whole system of healing. It incorporates physical movement, with correct positional alignment, permitting our bodies to adopt the posture which is of optimum benefit throughout life. It takes care of peace of mind so targets psychology, and because it accesses the realms of spiritual development, it takes care of our soul. The connection between mind, body and soul, can rarely be seen so simply in one single art form. Some might say T’ai Chi achieves something similar, and since I practice this too, I wouldnt argue, but as far as addressing the lay of connective tissue, or fascia I am not entirely convinced. But hey… I have an open mind :-)

PS. Perhaps someone out there might like to offer up an explanation on that point. In the meantime, anyone who might wish to contribute to our fundraising can do so at www.justgiving.com/Shehnaz-Batul-Dungarwalla Your contribution could go a long way in helping many who suffer with coronary heart problems, achieve a better quality of life. It doesnt have to be much, I maintain that if enough people gave  £1.00, we would soon reach our target. 5 ways to master your emotions

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I came across an article in a prominent womens magazine, given the title as above, and before actually reading the editorial I wrote the 5 ways which came to my mind based upon my experience and skill as a bodyworker, and yoga teacher. My 5 ways are:

1 Diet comprising of unrefined, unprocessed predominatly fresh food, and nutritional supplements

2. Pranayamic breath work

3. encouring self awareness

4. Letting go of  energies which serve our lives in a negative manner, and replacing them with positive energy, which encourages our growth and development. The most positive of which is Love. Love of self, love of others, love of the universe and its abundant qualities.

5.Yoga and meditation

Within these 5 ways you take care of mind, body and soul. Womens Health Magazine gave their 5 ways  as these:

1) Feeding the Brain vitamins

2)Breathing right

3)Know thyself

4)Step Out of the same old story

5)get your daily dose of Love and laughter (not quite in that terminology)

Its obvious that their 5 ways are incorporated into my first 4. I was actually surprised they didnt  mention Yoga or meditation. Meditation is the single most effective way of calming the mind, and switching off the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system alongside correct breathing, which is notorious for its negative impacts outside its normal function of homeostasis and fight or flight response. Both of these phenomenon are mentioned in up and coming articles, so watch out for them if you are interested.

In  a previous blog I mentioned that I have begun teaching Yoga Classes in my village. These classes are going down really well and already I am being asked to set up a second evening class, and the young girls from a community group I teach for free are also asking when I will be restarting. Its incredibly satisfying to know this ancient art is still so much in demand and growing in popularity.

Yoga has become a huge passion for me in recent years, and the more I work at it, the more I understand that its basis is sound. The meditative component targets the emotional turmoil which often threatens to overpower us with mental diseases like depression and anxiety. The physical postures and the progressive stretches, manipulate and lengthen a component of  tissue which is incredibly important in bodywork, this is connective tissue or what is known as Fascia. In an article which I wrote on Touch for Therapeutic purposes I talk about connective tissue or Fascia and its ‘personality’.

I beleive stuck, congested or contorted fascia is responsible for pain, chronic illness and more contraversially terminal health problems. Right from headaches, to asthma and to cancer fascial misalignment may be the answer to why we suffer ill health. Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage, Myofascial Release Therapy and Trigger point therapy are all ways we access the personality of fascia, and hopefully change it for the good of the patient.

Hello my name is Shehnaz

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Hello my name is Shehnaz Dungarwalla, from my beginnings as a beauty therapist some 20 or so years ago, my interest in peoples health has taken me from the world of the aesthetic into philosophy and teachings which promote the ability of the human spirit to overcome health issues, encourage positive thought patterns and take their lives into a realm they perhaps never believed. There are two things I have experienced recently, which most readily sum up what I have effectively been living, or trying to live and continue to integrate. Firstly from the film “Invictus” and secondly from the author Alex Howard a book entitled “Why ME”.

“We are the masters of our soul” and to truly live to our fullest potential we must “take action” to create our desired outcomes in life. We can see lifes challenges as opportunities to learn and grow from or we can let those challenges chew us up and spit us out. Its entirely our call.

These words are easy to say, but are not so easy to live, especially if you are someone who has suffered illness longterm, or endured pain with no sign of light anywhere in your future. If you are someone who crumbles under emotional stresses, how do you hope to see a world of opportunities instead of the whirlwind that constantly threatens to swallow you up?

A quote that is utilised in “Why ME” by Alex Howard says “It doen’t matter how many times you give up along the way, as long as you keep putting one foot infront of the other”.  Sometimes it a case of having some one caring enough to help you through those difficult times, or knowing there is someone who has professional knowledge and skill with the ability to guide and encourage you.
